WELCOME NEW MEMBERS PAUL MENGLE, RENEA ESOLDO AND DIANE McQUILLEN! All three are kayakers and have enjoyed spending some time on the river last month. Please welcome Paul, Renea and Diane when you see them in the Boathouse or on the water.
AUGUST 26TH MEMBER COOK-OUT (and family or guest) – Join us at the Boathouse for a cookout on Friday evening, August 26th at 6:30. We’ll grill some burgers and get to know the members you may not have met yet. BCRA will supply the burgers, buns, paper plates, plastic ware and sodas. Members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert and lawn chairs. Sign up in the Boathouse with your name and how many will be attending (and what you’re bringing if you know). THURSDAY EVENING AND SATURDAY MORNING ROWS CONTINUE – Weather permitting, you can plan on members being available for a row or kayak on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM and Saturday mornings throughout August. It’s a great time to try the double or connect with someone for kayaking. Email beavercountyrowing@gmail.com to verify if you’re interested in meeting someone.
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER – Don’t let the heat beat you up when you’re rowing or paddling this month. Heat stroke is caused by vigorous physical exercise in hot and humid conditions – like western PA in August! Keep in mind the following to make sure you avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke:
· Pay attention to the breeze. If you’re going into even a mild head wind and then make the turn, you’ll find that you have NO COOLING air movement at all when you’re coming back with the wind. So don’t work too hard going out so that you’re overheated coming back.
· Stay out of the sun. Early morning or late evening you can take advantage of some shade AND cooler temperatures. A hat may also keep the sun from beating down on your head.
· DRINK ; early and often!

NATIONAL CANOE AND KAYAK CHAMPIONSHIPS – In Newaygo, MI August 9-14. Hoping we’ll see BCRA Member Diane Blackburn entered again this year after her first place finish in 2010!
